We all need motivation for
this journey, and we need it every day.
When asked why, Zig Ziglar once said, "People often say that motivation
doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing-that's why we recommend it daily."
The ability and desire to
inspire your organization to provide professional, caring, friendly service is
not another thing to add to your to-do list, it's the way to lead authentically
and fearlessly, and it makes a real difference.
Employee satisfaction
surveys show a consistent theme:
employees want effective leaders.
I also believe they deserve them.
Effective means many things, but it certainly includes being inspirational. Inspiration can only be sincere and
real. Otherwise, it's known as
manipulation. Inspire someone to be
their best, and you have helped that person grow and succeed. Manipulate someone and you've helped create a
negative environment.
The best leaders I know
inspire authentically by being their personal best. That level of living your own life well
inspires Millenials and Generation Xers because it's real, and invites them to
follow your example.
My Millenial son-in-law
teaches this lesson well.
Dave served as an officer
for two tours of Iraq
with the Army's 101st Airborne Division. One of Dave's favorite sayings is "Mind your
business." As a child, when I asked too
many questions about relatives or neighbors, mom and dad would say "mind your own
business," so when I first heard Dave's words, I was taken aback. Then I realized the powerful truth. When we
mind our business, we are taking responsibility for ourselves which translates
to not only showing up, but being our best every day.
If "Mind Your Business" is a
strategy that works for a 26-year old who has led platoons in Iraq, I believe
it has merit in the business world for the rest of us today.
First, know that your
business is your responsibility. You set
the example every day with your words, but even more so with your actions. Have you modeled great service so your
employees can see you solving customer problems? Have you showed employees how to go the extra
mile to keep customers in tough times?
Do you talk about the values of service and live them so employees know
exactly what you mean?
Second, remember the
customer is the reason for your business.
Without the customer, you don't have a business. Focus on creating the customer service
experience that makes customers want to do more business with you. Even in slow times, you are building
relationships for the future. Build relationships for the future by stressing
great service now.
Third, be inspired in your
business. Employee satisfaction levels
soar with recognition, support and encouragement. Be inspired to make the job fun and celebrate
success. Millenials and Generation X
don't want dull, boring work. Your job
as a leader is to make every job meaningful as well as fun. Pretty hard to do that unless you are having
fun yourself!
This summer National
Geographic Magazine had an article and a picture of the first United States
penny coined in 1787. The words
imprinted on the bottom of the coin?
"Mind Your Business."
It's an idea whose time has
returned.
